Saranac Caramel Porter

saranac-caramel-porterWHY THIS BEER IS DELECTABLE …

From the Brewer – “Caramel, caramel, caramel! There is caramel in this beer, make no mistake. We took a traditional style porter and added REAL caramelized sugar for a delicious caramel flavor.

This is a traditional dark English style porter with a sweet caramel flavor, making it a very attractive beer to people who don’t usually like dark beer. The rich color comes from roasted barley, chocolate malt and caramel malt, which also add a nice roasted flavor.

We use East Kent Goldings hops, a very traditional English ale hop, which has roots back to the late 1700s. The other hops, Willamette, is a U.S. grown variety although it has a lot of the same characteristics as an English ale hop.”

Great when served with Spicy food, BBQ, Smoked Meats, Creme Brulee.

Anchor Brewing Porter

Anchor-Brewing-PorterIntimidating color. Unexpected taste. Welcome to American Porter.

From the Brewer – “With deep black color, a thick, creamy head, rich chocolate, toffee and coffee flavors, and full-bodied smoothness, Anchor Porter® is the epitome of a handcrafted dark beer.

A blend of specially roasted pale, caramel, chocolate, and black malts, along with our top-fermenting yeast, creates complexity without bitterness. The brew is hopped at a high rate, and naturally carbonated. The result is dark in the glass, but surprisingly light on the palate.

Anchor Porter® became the first modern American porter style beer when it was introduced in 1972. As we celebrate its 40th anniversary, our porter continues to reward those who look beyond its intimidating appearance to discover its smooth, full-bodied drinkability. Anchor Porter® is the definitive American Porter.”

Yards General Washington’s Tavern Porter

Yards-General-Washington’s-Tavern-PorterFrom the Brewer – “Detailed in a letter from the General to his officers during the war, Washington’s recipe employed molasses to aid fermentation and give rich caramel notes to this robust, roasty ale. The recipe reflected his admiration for Philadelphia-style porters, especially those brewed by Robert Hare (whose original brewery stood just blocks from where ours is now). Our Tavern Porter, inspired by Washington’s, is dark, smooth, and complex with just a hint of dried fruit in the finish.”

The porter’s dark malts and molasses help complement rich and roasty flavors. Try with a burger topped with Gruyere and caramelized onions, a large Sunday pot roast, and make sure to save some for any desserts involving chocolate and vanilla.

Great Lakes Brewing Edmund Fitzgerald Porter

Great-Lakes-Brewing-Edmund-Fitzgerald-PorterNamed for the great ship that tragically sunk in Lake Superior in 1975 with many Northeast Ohioans on board, our Edmund Fitzgerald is the dark, brooding type. One sip of this complex, flavorful porter inspires lavish bar napkin poetry and spirited closing-time soliloquies. It’s a meticulously crafted love letter in a bottle, an epic and flavorful voyage, each sip a bittersweet tribute.

Originated in Great Britain and named after the porters who hauled goods from wagons to the stands at open air markets common to England at that time.

From the Brewer – “Bittersweet chocolate-coffee taste and bold hop presence.”

Mikkeller Porter

From the Brewer – “The Mikkeller Porter is brewed at Amager Bryghus, bottled in half liter bottles and adorned with another label by American artist Keith Shore. This porter might be the most delicious beer Mikkeller has brewed in 2011. So soft, smooth, sweet and black, so inviting, delicate and habit-forming we are having second thoughts even releasing it. If you go just half as crazy as the people who have already tried it we will have a massive addiction epidemic on our hands. Mikkel even suggested drinking the whole batch himself, because as he said, Porter is so good it hurts him to see other people drink it. After some consideration we have decided to release it in one month.”
